El luchador gambiano que se convirtió en el campeón de un pueblo
Vultures circling above a dusty football pitch. A traditional wrestling festival in rural Gambia. A man who seemed to drift through the edges of the crowd unnoticed — until he stepped into the circle and became something else entirely.
My latest travel feature, published in Spanish by Nueva Tribuna, explores transformation, belonging and the strange power communities have to redefine the people within them. Set against the landscape of the Gambian River and the country’s recent political history, the piece became as much about identity and resilience as it did about wrestling itself.
The article also marks a personal milestone for me: my first travel feature published in Spanish in a national media outlet. Translating my own literary work while trying to preserve the cadence and texture of the original English was both challenging and deeply rewarding.
