The Gambian Wrestler Who Became a Village’s Champion
The vultures arrived before the wrestlers did.
In Bwiam, a dusty town in southern Gambia that most travelers see only through a windshield, an annual wrestling festival slowly takes shape beneath the heat: women cooking under a shea tree, children and vendors gathering around a circle scratched into the sand, drums waiting to begin.
And then there is one man moving quietly through the crowd.
Everyone seems to know him. Everyone greets him. Yet somehow he remains slightly apart — a man who belongs to the village, even if the world has not always made it easy for him to belong anywhere.
By the end of the afternoon, that circle in the sand will become something much bigger than a wrestling ring.
A story about strength, community, dignity and the strange ways a place decides who its champions are.
