Sal — La gramática de la sal y las llegadas
My travel essay on the island of Sal, in Cape Verde, has just been published by Nueva Tribuna, making it my second travel piece to appear in a national Spanish publication.
The story has an interesting backstory. I wrote it after visiting Sal, an island shaped by salt, arrivals, departures, and centuries of movement across the Atlantic. Shortly afterwards, Cape Verde found itself unexpectedly in the football headlines, first after drawing with Spain and then after another surprise result against Uruguay at the World Cup. Suddenly, many people were asking the same question: where exactly is Cape Verde?
This essay isn’t about football. It’s about place: the geography, history, and character of an island that has spent centuries on the margins of larger stories, only to find itself briefly at the centre of attention.
You can read the article in Spanish here.
The same piece was previously published in English with Perceptive Travel here.
