Sal — The Island That Keeps Calling People Home

Travel stories often begin with a destination. This one begins with a return.

My latest feature for the South China Morning Post explores Sal, the best-known island in Cabo Verde. While most visitors come for its beaches, warm Atlantic waters and year-round sunshine, I found a more compelling story unfolding just beneath the surface.

Across the island, members of the Cabo Verdean diaspora are coming home. They’re opening businesses, investing in their communities and redefining what Sal can become beyond its reputation as a package-holiday destination.

It’s a story about migration, identity and belonging as much as it is about travel—and a reminder that the most interesting places are often shaped by the people who choose to return.
